How long does SEO take to work?

SEO takes 3-12 months to show measurable results. Brand keywords (#1 for your company name) take 2-4 weeks. Long-tail keywords (4+ word phrases with low competition) take 2-4 months. Medium-competition keywords take 6-12 months. High-competition keywords take 12-24 months, if ever.

The timeline depends on four factors: domain authority (new domains start slower), content quality and volume, backlink acquisition rate, and keyword competition. A new domain targeting "best CRM software" will take years. The same domain targeting "CRM integration for veterinary clinics" might rank in 3 months.

What happens month by month: Month 1-2 — Google discovers and indexes your content. You see impressions but few clicks. Month 3-4 — rankings start appearing, typically page 3-5 for target keywords. Month 5-8 — content begins climbing. Some long-tail keywords hit page 1. Month 9-12 — medium-difficulty keywords reach page 1. Traffic compounds.

The compounding effect is real: a single well-optimized article can drive 50-200 visits per month for years. After 100 articles, that's 5,000-20,000 organic visitors monthly — growing without additional ad spend.

Anyone promising first-page rankings in 30 days is either targeting zero-competition keywords (useless) or using techniques that will get your site penalized (dangerous).
