What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the optimization of your website's infrastructure so search engines can crawl, index, and render your content efficiently. It's the foundation — without it, even the best content won't rank.

Core technical SEO checklist: 1) Crawlability — robots.txt allows important pages, blocks unimportant ones. XML sitemap lists all indexable URLs. No orphan pages (pages with no internal links). 2) Indexability — canonical tags prevent duplicate content issues. No accidental noindex tags. Proper pagination handling. 3) Renderability — JavaScript doesn't block content rendering. Server-side rendering for critical content. No content hidden behind interactions.

4) Performance — Core Web Vitals all green (LCP < 2.5s, CLS < 0.1, INP < 200ms). TTFB < 500ms. Efficient caching. Image optimization. 5) Architecture — clean URL structure, logical internal linking, proper heading hierarchy (H1 → H2 → H3), breadcrumbs. 6) Security — HTTPS everywhere, no mixed content. 7) International — hreflang tags, language-specific sitemaps, proper geo-targeting.

Tools for technical SEO: Google Search Console (free, essential), Screaming Frog ($0-199/year, crawl analysis), Ahrefs or Semrush (site audit features), and Lighthouse (free, performance metrics).

Technical SEO is 10% of the effort but enables the other 90%. Fix technical issues first — they multiply the effect of everything else.
