What is the Privacy Sandbox?

The Privacy Sandbox is Google Chrome initiative to replace third-party cookies with privacy-preserving alternatives. Instead of individual tracking via cookies, the Privacy Sandbox groups users into cohorts based on browsing behavior, limiting what advertisers can learn about individuals. Key APIs: Topics API (replaces third-party cookie tracking with broad interest categories — "Fitness" or "Travel" instead of individual browsing history), Attribution Reporting (measures ad conversions without tracking individual users across sites), Protected Audiences (enables remarketing without third-party cookies by keeping audience data on-device), and Shared Storage (limited cross-site data sharing with privacy guardrails). Impact on operations: third-party cookies are being phased out in Chrome. This affects ad targeting, attribution, and cross-site tracking. First-party data becomes more valuable. Server-side tracking replaces client-side tracking. Contextual advertising (targeting based on page content, not user history) makes a comeback. For EMPIRIUM clients: migrate tracking to server-side, build first-party data strategies, implement Google Consent Mode, and test your analytics accuracy as cookie deprecation progresses.
